2001 The Schilling Era
On 18th April, 2001 the last bi-metal 50 Schilling coin before the Euro was issued by the Austrian Mint in Vienna. As of January 2002, Austria will join 11 other European countries in the new common Euro currency. Consequently this last base metal 50 Schilling issue commemorates the Schilling, which was the national currency of Austria for the greater part of the 20th century.
The bi-metal 50 Schilling coin shows three versions of the 1 Schilling coin throughout its history. The original issue of 1924 displayed the Parliament in Vienna on one side and the red-white-red shield of Austria surrounded by olive branches on the other. The first Schilling issued after the Second World War in 1946/47 had a farmer sowing his field (a symbol for post-war reconstruction). This aluminium coin was replaced in 1959 by a bronze version with three Edelweiss flowers. It is this coin that will see out the Schilling currency when the Euro coins and banknotes are issued in 2002.
