2 euro vaticano 2004
To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the foundation of Vatican City State, the Philatelic and Numismatic Office is issuing a € 2 coin. On the reverse side it bears a stylized plan of Vatican City in which St. Peter's Basilica and Square are clearly visible. The citadel we see today was born within fortifications designed to defend the tomb of St. Peter, with the Basilica standing above it and its boundaries defined by the Leonine walls and Bernini's colonnade. UNESCO has declared it part of the "artistic heritage of humanity". A favourite destination for pilgrims and tourists, Vatican City State, which is located in the city of Rome, came into being on February 11th 1929, with the so-called "Lateran pacts" between the Holy See and Italy that led to the creation of a new geo-political entity, Vatican City State, placed under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Holy See. This city is the capital of the greatest "kingdom" in the world, a spiritual kingdom to which millions of Catholics spread over all the continents belong by right.
