After a brief period of independence between the two World Wars, Latvia was annexed by the USSR in 1940. It reestablished its independence in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Although the last Russian troops left in 1994, the status of the Russian minority (some 30% of the population) remains of concern to Moscow. Latvia continues to revamp its economy for eventual integration into various Western European political and economic institutions and was invited to join NATO and the EU in 2002.
Euro is coming !
After a positive vote to join European Union on Sept. 20, Latvia will tie its currency to Euro in 2004 and by 2005 the prices in Euro will be displayed along side the prices in Lats. It is also possible that Euro will become a sole Latvia's currency in 2007. We will say good bye to those fish and cows on our coins. However, is it not a waste of money to resign one-lat coins at this point? The Bank of Latvia announced a competition on a new design of a one-lat coin. 1st place recepient will receive an award of 1,000 lats. (approx. US $1,700)
