Kuopio is a developing centre for Eastern Finland, casting its influence over an area that contains 600,000 people. There are 86,000 inhabitants in Kuopio, 90% live in the city and suburbs and 10% in rural areas.
Kuopio is a thriving modern city. Compared to the whole country, the average age of the population is lower than elsewhere.
In recent years the increase in the population has been about 500 annually.
Kuopio is a centre of commerce, whose wholesale and retail services cover the whole of Eastern Finland. There are several important administrative centres and institutions in Kuopio for example the East Finland Appeal Court, the headquarters of Finnvera Ltd (a regional development fund), the University of Kuopio, The North Savo Polytechnic and the Orthodox Church Council of Finland. The city covers nearly 1,200 km2, of which 34% is water. The shoreline is 1,600 km long. Kuopio is surrounded by lake Kallavesi.
Kuopio is easily reached by road, rail, air or water. The main artery of the region is highway no 5 leading from Helsinki to Lapland.
The distance from the capital of Finland, Helsinki, is 400 km, 45 minutes by air. The ship route from Kuopio to the Baltic Sea is navigable most of the year.
Puijo hill is the famous landmark of Kuopio, and the ridge of Puijo is among the most popular recreation areas of the city. The hill is 150 metres high, has an observation tower on its peak and is situated close to the city centre of Kuopio. map
Alahovi Wine Farm
At the Alahovi Berry Farm, situated close to Kuopio, you can watch how berry wines are made, sample the wines, have a meal, and browse in the farm’s wine shop. Alahovi can be reached by road or by boat, for example by joining a Wine Farm Cruise. There is also an exhibition of works of art with floral themes by Risto Vilhunen.

Jätkänkämppä Lumberjack Lodge
At Jätkänkämppä, a genuine lumberjack lodge, you can join in Traditional Finnish Evenings on Tuesdays and 3 June-16 Sep 2004 also on Thursdays. The special evening entertainment, suitable for the whole family, includes bathing in the world’s largest smoke sauna, lumberjack shows, and a traditional meal with live background music played on the accordion. The menu comprises Robber’s Roast on Tuesdays and smoked fish on Thursdays.

Marikko Training Centre
The gardens and greenhouses of the Marikko Training Centre contain a collection of medicinal and poisonous plants. The outdoor areas and greenhouses are open 1 May-30 Sept Mon-Fri 08.00-15.00; other times by appointment. Free admission.

The Market Hall has been selling local and imported products since 1902. The Art Nouveau style Market Hall building is one of the most precious buildings in Kuopio, and inside there are around 30 stalls. You'll find a good selection of speciality products in the Market Hall, topped off with friendly service. Open: Mon-Fri 08.00-17.00, Sat 08.00-15.00. Location. www.kuopionkauppahalli.net
The Marketplace is the indisputable hub of Kuopio in summer, where you can experience the traditional local atmosphere at its best. It is also an excellent place for shopping, with stalls offering a variety of fresh farm produce, beautiful handicrafts, and of course 'kalakukko' fish pies, the mouth-watering local speciality. Pikku-Pietari Market Alley
Only a stone's throw form the Marketplace is the idyllic Pikku-Pietari Market Alley, lined by old stables. The log buildings of the alley house a cafe with a terrace, art exhibitions and small boutiques.

The vast panorama of an endless mosaic of blue lakes and green islands that can be seen from the Puijo Tower is a spectacle not to missed by anybody visiting Kuopio. The tower, situated about 1.5 kilometres from the city centre, has a revolving panoramic restaurant that serves local specialities in summer. The tower and the hostel at the foot of it are surrounded by a unique primeval forest.

An old-time block of wooden buildings in the centre of Kuopio.

The Orthodox Church Museum of Finland
The museum houses one of the most beautiful icon collections in the western world, precious gold and silver objects, and lavishly embroidered church textiles.
